Chad is host to one of the largest and fastest-growing displacement crises in the world. Since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023, well over one million refugees and returnees have crossed into eastern Chad, with new arrivals continuing to arrive on a weekly basis. Combined with refugees from the Central African Republic and Cameroon, Chad now hosts close to 1.8 million forcibly displaced people, placing enormous strain on host communities, basic services and natural resources. The response remains concentrated in the Ouaddaï and Wadi Fira regions of eastern Chad, where humanitarian access, water availability and funding are critically constrained.
